Quirky Kitchen Idea – Colour Blocking – Houzz
Jo Simmons at Houzz showcases this unique kitchen with doors colour blocked in Mondrian colours. The island is cleverly mounted on a Perspex stand making it appear as though it’s floating helping the space to feel bigger and lighter. The yellow floor has a big thumbs up from us, and reminds us of our plywood kitchen with orange floor project that we did a while back.

Unique Kitchen Designs – Coloured Hoods – Wood & Wire
Let’s be honest, range ovens are great, but their extractor hoods? Not always easy on the eye. Not so in this project. Here, the extractor has been seamlessly integrated into the wall, colour-matched to perfection. What could’ve been an industrial eyesore is now a beautifully understated design feature. Proof that function doesn’t have to fight with form.

Unusual Kitchen Cabinets – Raffia – HG
Charlotte McCaughan-Hawes of House & Garden features this stunning bespoke oak cabinet kitchen, its doors fronted in raffia bound in resin, a tactile detail that sets the tone for understated luxury. The pièce de résistance? A splashback of Pyrolave volcanic stone, adding a quietly decadent finish to this flat overlooking Kensington Gardens.

Unusual Kitchen Idea – Concealed Utilities – Pinterest
Kim Dean’s board on Pinterest features this unusual kitchen worktop idea. A handy knife block and chopping board which can be folded away to the wall when not in use. With a uniquely designed bespoke kitchen, so much is possible as we demonstrated for our clients The Solomons. Having a small house and tight kitchen space, they asked us to help make room in their scheme for their vacuum cleaner.

Unique Kitchen Idea – Tiny Kitchen – Wood & Wire
This compact setup proves that good design isn’t about square footage, it’s about precision. Every cabinet, appliance, and work surface has been considered to the millimetre, no filler, no fuss. The clean lines, warm timber, and integrated lighting create a sense of calm and clarity, rather than compromise. A great example of how a kitchen doesn’t need to shout to stand out, sometimes the quietest designs leave the strongest impression.

Creative Kitchen Design – Statement Flooring – Elle Decor
Anna Fixsen at Elle Decor recommends bold floors or statement rugs as a handy distraction from kitchen cabinets that aren’t exactly easy on the eye. But with a view like this? You’d be forgiven for ditching the kitchen entirely. We love a statement floor here at Wood & Wire, the one our clients chose for this simple monochrome kitchen has to be our favourite.

Uncommon Kitchen – Walnut Veneered Ply – HB
Ore Studios that her blue mid-century serve ware and tableware should anchor the whole space so the team leaned into open cubbies and pops of red to create a vibrant, no-nonsense colour palette. But really, House Beautiful didn’t need to look all the way to Seattle for mid-century kitchen inspo. They could’ve just got in touch with us, mid-century style kitchens are totally our bag!

Quirky Kitchen Design – Statement Island – Xclusive Kitchens
Xclusive kitchens blog highlights how a statement island can transform a kitchen, bringing a scheme to life and delivering the wow factor a space deserves. Over the years, we’ve designed our fair share but this plywood kitchen island remains one of our most popular (and most impactful) to date.

Crazy Kitchens – Organic Forms – Ideal Home
Thea at Ideal Home collates a collection of (dare we say it?) horrific unusual kitchen schemes, although we were fond of this organic narrowboat kitchen. Whilst this is an uncommon project for us to select, being based in Hebden Bridge, narrow-boat homes are no strangers to us. An unconventional kitchen for an equally unconventional home.

Chic and Sleek Kitchens – Architectural Digest
Over at Architectural Digest, the team explore how to maximise natural light in this New York kitchen project, designed by Laura Santos for her family. Set in a townhouse, the space features sleek custom wooden cabinets that bring the outside in. The family can choose to dine at the sculptural wooden table or step out onto the patio surrounded by lush greenery. Not quite a townhouse, but in a Lancashire terrace we pulled off a similar vibe in this teak kitchen. Warm timber finishes, tonnes of natural light, and a seamless link between indoors and out. Proof that good design isn’t about your postcode, it’s about intention.

Creative Kitchen Design – Space Saving – The Farthing
Bloggers over at The Farthing suggest making the most of high ceilings with generously sized wall cupboards. We’ve got mixed opinions on proportions like this here at Wood & Wire but would say this layout works well here, especially with the picture window cutting through the space. Thinking about a similar layout to maximise space in your kitchen? Check out this bespoke kitchen design we created for a client who opted for a double layer of sliding cupboards.

Unique Kitchen Idea – Lego Island – Pinterest
This quirky kitchen island idea features on the Design Ideas board over at Pinterest. A technicolour centrepiece, this kitchen idea is a real focal point against the white backdrop of the remaining space. Made of Lego, we’re not sure how they did it (perhaps it’s a render?) but this certainly must be a labour of love and we love it too!

Creative Kitchen Cabinet Ideas – OSB – House Beautiful
An uncommon kitchen material features in this scheme from the House Beautiful creative kitchen roundup. Neutral tones and raw materials complement these oriented strand board (OSB) kitchen cabinets and shelves, demonstrating that even cheaper materials like OSB have a unique aesthetic and in the right application can be made to shine. (photo credit Nicole Franzen). OSB can add a wonderful organic textured aesthetic when used on a project. Here’s a valchromat kitchen project we did where OSB was utilised for the splash back.

Kitchen Ideas – Valcromat – Homify
Valchromat is an unusual kitchen material. It’s more expensive than other materials and requires a specialised finish. However, what you get in return is a unique kitchen cabinet featuring a depth of colour and texture which is second to none. Paired down like this scheme selected by Homify, a valchromat option doesn’t have to be all out there. This nonconforming material choice can instead portray understated elegance. As Valchromat specialists we of course really love working with this material.

Modern Kitchen Designs – Geometry – Home Designing
Colour confidence is almost always a key feature in any unusual kitchen design as is unconventional geometry. Home Designing discuss on their blog how in this geometric scheme the dramatic curves of the pendants are accentuated.

Unconventional Kitchen Designs – Open Cabinetry – H&G
This isn’t strictly an unusual kitchen idea but with the general cultural trend of fully integrated, minimalist kitchens it’s unconventional to suggest having everything out on show. However, as House & Garden detail in this article, when space is tight, shelves are much more accessible, practical and will most definitely save you a head injury or two.
