The Kites

When the Kites approached us to work with them on their generous kitchen extension project, they’d already chosen their gorgeous orange floor and wanted something that would work well alongside it. We helped them select a white, blue and oak veneer plywood kitchen scheme to complement the vibrant floor. The open-plan kitchen led onto their main dining and living space, so we needed something attractive and subtle as it was a space they’d be looking at all of the time. Even though it was a large kitchen, we opted to use white for the cupboards above eye level to maintain a sense of openness and give the kitchen an uncluttered aspect when viewed from sitting in the living area. As well as the simple white cupboards, we distinguished the kitchen from the main living quarters even more by adding a breakfast bar. As a large kitchen space we had no trouble accommodating all the requirements of the brief, which included a single oven, a steam oven, a microwave combi oven, a warming drawer, a wine fridge and a free-standing fridge and separate freezer. When selecting other colours to work alongside such a bright orange covering an expansive area like the floor, we’d always veer towards a more muted palette to avoid any major clashes. As always though, we’re delighted to see our clients embrace unconventional choices, and to see the final scheme smash any preconceived ideas of what might or should work. We looked forward to seeing the Kite’s kitchen completed, and when we returned to photograph the space it was wonderful to see all the little extra touches like an orange clock and large, bulbous, grey light fittings helping tie the whole scheme together.
