We were delighted when the Phillips let us help them create their dream open-plan plywood kitchen, and we promised to consider every last detail for this real ‘foodie’ family. Created without compromise, there are no half measures in this scheme, and that starts with the huge American style fridge-freezer, designed to nestle perfectly between the bridged tall pull-out larder unit and the double tall larder units, housing not one but two ovens, a microwave and a warming drawer. Next up was every coffee lover’s coffee-making heaven. We deliberately added some open shelving beneath the oak veneer wall cupboards, allowing for easy access to a curated collection of coffee cups for that urgent caffeine fix. Like in most traditional kitchen layouts, the double stainless steel sink overlooks the garden, but in a move that bucks the trend for dishwashers, this scheme features a double-drawer pull-out dishwasher. When you actually see it in action, it really makes us wonder why we don’t come across them more often. On the other side of the sink live the toast-making facilities, with bread and toaster on hand together in a specially designed open shelving unit, sitting above the work surface to keep it clutter-free.
In this scheme though, the main feature of the kitchen is the ‘cooking station’, with everything a chef could need just an easy reach away. At the heart of the kitchen island sits the induction hob, complete with chef’s drawers below, containing pots, pans and utensils. Either side of the drawers, pull-out larder units provide easy access to essential herbs, spices and condiments, keeping surfaces wonderfully clear during cooking. To the side of the kitchen island, some mixed open shelving and cupboard space allows for the storage of even more kitchen equipment, and at the front of the kitchen island is some seating, storage and a pop-up power unit, providing a mini-office at the centre of this space.
