The Nisbets

Wood & Wire were invited to design and install a handmade kitchen in Hebden Bridge for this client who’d bought the house in their hometown to serve them as both a second home and a rental property. With a long history of ‘making’ in their family, the Nisbets were keen to employ local craftsmen to renovate the house. The space, which would have originally had two rooms at ground floor level, had been knocked into one room, which is a common renovation for this type of property in the area. By doing this, residents get to enjoy extra light from the additional window as well as creating a more open space to live in.

Sitting at the back of the house, our U-shaped scheme starts alongside the back door, fitting snugly under the back window with a fully integrated Siemens dishwasher and Franke sink unit comprising an under-mounted steel single sink with matching tap. The layout swiftly wraps around to a corner cabinet and base-level oven, while, above, a triple-layer of sliding wall units with two small open apertures houses a Siemens integrated microwave.

Here, the scheme wraps quickly around to a second corner cabinet and three-drawer base unit with a Bora Pure hob above it, nestled seamlessly into the white Corian worktops with coved upstands. The hob overlooks the living area, allowing the house chef to enjoy some company or even a spot of TV while cooking. Meanwhile, house guests and residents get to enjoy the charming illuminated open shelving packed with treasures, which flank the outward face of the kitchen. Next to the back door, our client asked to retain access to their basement at floor level under the stairs, so we created a castored ‘rolling’ platform supporting the fridge / freezer and a storage unit.

To maximise warmth and light, our client chose an uplifting mix of pink, yellow and birch with a touch of grey, as precious light in the bottom of the valley is short-lived, even on the brightest days. The scheme was completed with restored floorboards and cream walls and ceiling.
