The Holdsworths
The Holdsworth family approached us to design and manufacture bespoke kitchen units for their kitchen/diner and living solution for a barn they owned, just across the street from their property in the Upper Calder Valley of West Yorkshire. The plan was to develop the site from its humble beginnings into a welcoming home for their daughter and her partner to live in. Overall, the building was developed with the bedrooms downstairs to elevate the living area into the light. In turn, we were presented with a modest first-floor space to plan, which included a beautiful calming aspect revealing the wooded area ahead through its floor-to-ceiling windows. With no space to waste in this compact room, we opted for a simple galley layout designed to line the inner wall. Along here we placed a run of bespoke kitchen units comprising of the sink, dishwasher and recycling unit alongside a tall fridge/freezer nestled perfectly into the sloping roof above. Overhead, handmade wall units present both extra storage and integrated microwave, while the hob opposite faces outwards into the room, so views or guests can be enjoyed while cooking. Nestled underneath we located the integrated oven, flanked by a three-drawer base unit and further storage units, while an oak supporting structure suspends sliding cupboards – home to the extractor and yet more storage.
At worksurface level, the Holdsworths selected our most popular Corian surface in Glacier White, with seamless curved upstands and splashback behind the sink. All appliances are supplied by Siemens. To complement the exposed edge birch ply cabinets, a simple combination of birch-fronted doors was chosen, highlighted with joyful pops of yellow and navy blue. With the space limited in size, we were also invited to provide the young couple with both an informal and formal dining and workspace solution. Here, we opted for a breakfast bar with a handy ‘stow away’ surface area housed under the breakfast bar area, nicely finished in deep blue laminate. To complete the scheme, the couple – both avid readers – asked for a way to showcase their favourite books. We responded with a birch ply bookcase inset with pops of yellow, which also cleverly serves as the balcony of the stairs to the lower ground floor. To finish, the couple opted for white walls and ceilings and an oak laminate floor.
