The Lawrences
The brief for this bespoke kitchen in Halifax, located in a lovely little weavers’ cottage, nestled in the Calder Valley hills surrounding the Wood & Wire workshop, was to incorporate the colours of our client’s favourite Marmoleum floor tiles. The space was a relatively tight one to work with, given its awkward position: partially nestled underneath a stone staircase and also hampered by the presence of an old chimney breast. Still, we love a challenge, and this space gave us a welcome opportunity to think creatively about how to incorporate its defining features.
The scheme, an L-shaped formation, starts in a corner underneath the stairs and begins with a tall, thin open shelving unit for wine and the storage of spices. Falling back to the wall directly under the stairs, we built in a small drop-down lid storage cupboard to maximise the use of precious space in the room. Leading along the main wall of the kitchen, there’s storage, a three-drawer unit with hob directly above, and an integrated dishwasher by SIEMENS. There’s also a sink cabinet with 1.5 under-mounted stainless steel sink by Franke, complete with matching mixer tap, which together sits under the main kitchen window overlooking the street from the house.
Above the hob, an under-mount lit double sliding door unit houses the integrated extractor fan and more food storage. On the second wall, at base level a corner cupboard and additional slim cupboard lead towards the wide chimney breast. Meanwhile, a wall unit incorporating sloped illuminated open shelving and full-depth cupboards ensures no light is lost through the kitchen window, and also maximise storage. Continuing the seamless scheme, some shallow open shelving adorns the cheeks of the chimney, while in the mouth of the chimney itself we used the space for two integrated SIEMENS ovens at chest height, with double aerated veg drawer and a small storage cupboard below. Beside these we have some further storage and scooped-back shelving to fit snugly against the aging walls, and finally, the scheme is finished with an integrated SIEMENS fridge-freezer. The colour scheme used on the base fronts is an earthy combination of aubergine, burnt orange, warm blue and cream, all topped with grey Corian worktops with curved upstands. Above eye level, waxed birch ply units complement the painted cream walls and ceiling, while the client has chosen a burnt orange Marmoleum floor.
